Homecoming Tomorrow

Yesterday we spent the day bonding with Atticus and having visitors to the room.

Deb Solow brought Oskar up for a morning visit to kick things off and it didn't stop until 2:30 p.m. It was great seeing many of our friends and family that live in Atlanta and having them meet Atticus for the first time.

The rest of the day, Lauren and I worked on getting back into the infant groove. Timing feedings, changing diapers, rocking, sleeping, cleaning circumcisions, etc. It's all coming back now. I remember why we were so exhausted when Oskar arrived.

Fortunately we already have the 'muscle' memory from Oskar to get us through a lot of the mechanics. This is good since we did not have a 2 year old at the time Oskar was born and I suppose a lot of our new effort will go towards building up those skills. I already feel torn between my three loves, or at least spread thin. It will be a challenge to get better at this type of juggling.

I got a chance to come home and spend the day with Oskar while Lauren and her mom visited at the hospital. He really needed some Dad time and was so excited to see me that he went around the room hugging everyone, even our neighbors who stopped by for a visit. Oskar's napping right now and I can't wait to play with him some more. It feels like weeks since we've been at the hospital, even though it's only been since early Wednesday morning. This is the longest we've been away from him since he was born and it is a strange feeling.

The doctors are having us stay one more night to be sure that Lauren is ready to go home and to monitor some mild jaundice with 'Gus'. Whatever is best for the family, even if it means interrupted institutional sleep for one last time.

Gus had his security photo taken yesterday and it should be available online by tomorrow. I'll be sure to post the link to it. Very cute.

That's all the news for today. We will be back home by tomorrow for dinner.

29 Hours later

Thank you to everyone for all of the great emails, comments and well-wishing. It's been more than a day and it's amazing how much gets packed into the first 24 hours of a child's life. First of all, both Mom and Atticus are doing great.

Lauren is well on her way to recovery from her surgery and every report has been A+. All of her I.V., tubes and peripheral equipment is gone and she is fully medicated for pain. Her commentary and interaction with the new baby while doped up are priceless. I promised her that I would not post any of it to the blog. all that I will say is that there is a reason she doesn't drink at parties.

The OB/Midwife from her practice came by for a checkup this morning and it sounds like she could be released from the hospital as early as Saturday or as late as Sunday. It is a great and helpful hospital at Northside full of activity and checkups, but it leaves little time for restful sleep. We will be glad to be home.

Dick and Jan left about an hour ago to drive back to Ohio. We miss them already. They were such a huge help with Oskar over the past few days and in preparation of the nursery and house. I don't know what we would have done without them.

Lauren's mom arrives this afternoon for a 2 week stay. I can't wait for her to meet 'Gus' and see Oskar. He loves his BG!!

Atticus went to the nursery about 30 minutes ago for his circumcision, or as our former OB from Oskar's delivery called it, 'Weenie Whacking'. He should be back any minute for some more sleeping, eating and pooping and will be a little less of the little man that he was yesterday.

Oskar visited again this morning with his Nanny. He is so attentive and empathetic to his little brother's cries. All he wants to do is hold him and tell him 'is O.K. baby' (smooch). I get so proud of him when he does this I well up. I saw Papa Dick getting misty too.

I'm including a photo from yesterday afternoon until we can get a chance to have a portrait sitting with him and Mommy.

Love and kisses to you all.
