Homecoming Tomorrow

Yesterday we spent the day bonding with Atticus and having visitors to the room.

Deb Solow brought Oskar up for a morning visit to kick things off and it didn't stop until 2:30 p.m. It was great seeing many of our friends and family that live in Atlanta and having them meet Atticus for the first time.

The rest of the day, Lauren and I worked on getting back into the infant groove. Timing feedings, changing diapers, rocking, sleeping, cleaning circumcisions, etc. It's all coming back now. I remember why we were so exhausted when Oskar arrived.

Fortunately we already have the 'muscle' memory from Oskar to get us through a lot of the mechanics. This is good since we did not have a 2 year old at the time Oskar was born and I suppose a lot of our new effort will go towards building up those skills. I already feel torn between my three loves, or at least spread thin. It will be a challenge to get better at this type of juggling.

I got a chance to come home and spend the day with Oskar while Lauren and her mom visited at the hospital. He really needed some Dad time and was so excited to see me that he went around the room hugging everyone, even our neighbors who stopped by for a visit. Oskar's napping right now and I can't wait to play with him some more. It feels like weeks since we've been at the hospital, even though it's only been since early Wednesday morning. This is the longest we've been away from him since he was born and it is a strange feeling.

The doctors are having us stay one more night to be sure that Lauren is ready to go home and to monitor some mild jaundice with 'Gus'. Whatever is best for the family, even if it means interrupted institutional sleep for one last time.

Gus had his security photo taken yesterday and it should be available online by tomorrow. I'll be sure to post the link to it. Very cute.

That's all the news for today. We will be back home by tomorrow for dinner.

29 Hours later

Thank you to everyone for all of the great emails, comments and well-wishing. It's been more than a day and it's amazing how much gets packed into the first 24 hours of a child's life. First of all, both Mom and Atticus are doing great.

Lauren is well on her way to recovery from her surgery and every report has been A+. All of her I.V., tubes and peripheral equipment is gone and she is fully medicated for pain. Her commentary and interaction with the new baby while doped up are priceless. I promised her that I would not post any of it to the blog. all that I will say is that there is a reason she doesn't drink at parties.

The OB/Midwife from her practice came by for a checkup this morning and it sounds like she could be released from the hospital as early as Saturday or as late as Sunday. It is a great and helpful hospital at Northside full of activity and checkups, but it leaves little time for restful sleep. We will be glad to be home.

Dick and Jan left about an hour ago to drive back to Ohio. We miss them already. They were such a huge help with Oskar over the past few days and in preparation of the nursery and house. I don't know what we would have done without them.

Lauren's mom arrives this afternoon for a 2 week stay. I can't wait for her to meet 'Gus' and see Oskar. He loves his BG!!

Atticus went to the nursery about 30 minutes ago for his circumcision, or as our former OB from Oskar's delivery called it, 'Weenie Whacking'. He should be back any minute for some more sleeping, eating and pooping and will be a little less of the little man that he was yesterday.

Oskar visited again this morning with his Nanny. He is so attentive and empathetic to his little brother's cries. All he wants to do is hold him and tell him 'is O.K. baby' (smooch). I get so proud of him when he does this I well up. I saw Papa Dick getting misty too.

I'm including a photo from yesterday afternoon until we can get a chance to have a portrait sitting with him and Mommy.

Love and kisses to you all.

All work and no play. . . .

Introducing the newest member to the Digital Muse team.

The new father and son duo work very well together. He is learning the ropes.

Dad keeps him very busy.

Sometimes he is even on call when he goes out to play. He has been practicing and has become very adept at "blackberrying".

6 Month Checkup

Oskar is six months old!!!! We can't believe he is 6 months already, yet it feels like he has always been a part of our life.
The doctor said he looks great. He is 19 lbs 2 oz - BIG BOY- that's our little chunker and 26.5 inches long. He has started eating rice cereal twice a day. Of course more ends up all over the place than in his mouth, but he'll get there. Tomorrow he will get to try sweet potatoes for the first time - that should make a nice smear!

Post Holiday Update

Wow, the holiday's hit and I feel like I fell off the face of the earth. It's taken until today to get back to some semblance of normal life.

During this time we have gone through a number of milestones with Oskar. He is lifting his head during tummy time and almost pushing up when he can get his hands in front of him. He also loves being vertical, although his vibro-lounger is still a big hit for playtime. The two biggest changes have been that he is REALLY interacting with his peeps and toys.

Faces are the most fun to play with. I could spend hours nose to nose with him muggy for reactions. He gets the biggest smile during "tongue time" and is starting to laugh out loud

We are having lots of music time every day including all the classics (Eensy Weensy Spider, Bingo, Old Macdonald, etc) as well as some classic rock, oldies, and motown. Oz loves to be serenaded by dad and his acoustic guitar.

Oskar got so many new things for Christmas/Hannukah that he will be wearing new outfits well into the new year and playing with a new toy each day for a long time.

One of the neatest things that we learned over the holidays is that Oz is a good traveler. He did perfectly on both of his flights, the train rides in Hartsfield-Jackson, the bus ride to and from the parking lot, and the hours spent in the car during our tour of the northeast. What a trooper.

I hope to be making more entries again now that we're back, but time seems to be very limited right now so if you keep checking back daily (Mandy VonSee) but are consistently disappointed when there is nothing new, sign up for notifications on the right side of the BabyForce blog and you can receive email notifications when I make new entries.

Happy New Year!

First Road Trip with a Baby

We took our first long trip with Oskar to Boca Raton, FL last week to visit family and in anticipation of Thanksgiving. He proved to be a very good traveler lasting 6+ hours in the car with little problem and handling his first stay at a motor lodge with ease.

It took a couple of days (and some cranky nights) to get settled in.

Oz met his "Hopie" this week as well as O'Pa (the Outlaw Grandpa) Ken and his family. Oz likes Florida and our walks around the neighborhood, but could do without all the car rides.

The Nicolos are taking a cruise for Thanksgiving to the Western Carribean and happened to be in Ft. Lauderdale while we were visiting so we took a trip down to see them for dinner. We met Andrew for the first time and Will has grown so big and is talking non-stop.

The weather has been unseasonably cool. We are hoping to take the whole family down to the beach at some point if the chilliness breaks. If not, I guess we'll have to settle for days of leftovers and football. Ah, well.....if we must. :)

Bugaboo Graduation!

Last week Oz graduated to the 'seat' configuration for his stroller. He's getting pretty big now and talking up a storm. He particularly likes talking on the changing table and just before bedtime (after bath). It's hard to tell exactly what he's talking about right now but we're pretty sure it's ideas for xmas presents and something about wanting a little brother or sister at some point.

BG's Photo Fix - Week of 11/1/2006

Visit with Grandma and the Awakening

Last week Grandma, my Mom, came to visit us for 4 days. We had a great time. It was her first stay in Atlanta and her first glimpse at her first grandson. Grandma is a super playmate and teacher and Oskar loved every minute of her stay.

Oz loved seeing Grandma especially in the morning and decided to wake up at 5:00 a.m. every day of her visit to make the most of her stay.

We hit some of our favorite restaurants and did some shopping at the Target Plaza. It was a gorgeous day so we spent a lot of time just strolling through the strip. We hit the bookstore and took Grandma for her first Cold Stone Creamery treat. What fun.

This was also the week that Oskar decided to start "talking" during playtime and smiling at his mother and Grandma. It is so cool to hear my son vocalizing like that. He is definitely waking up from his early baby phase and becoming more active and interactive. I am amazed at him. His personality endearing and riveting.

If I could save milk in a bottle

the first thing that I'd like to do
is to feed my son while his mother is sleeping
or at times in the late afternoon.

This past week, we finally sorted out our breast pump situation. At first Lauren bought a manual one that was defective, so we had to order a replacement part. During that time, we decided to check out some electric pumps too and I decided to drop the $$$ on the one that my wife really wanted but was having trouble justifying the cost.

She knew it was the best one, I knew we would be using it for a while so we should have one that is reliable and that would work for other infants (oh yeah). A woman at Target, unsolicited, confirmed that she had tried them all and the Medela was the one to get. So I got.

Now I get to feed my son, which by the way is much more fun than dealing with the byproduct side of his digestion. Once a day he gets a bottle and he loves it. Lauren gets to sleep during one nighttime feeding. Dad gets to provide more than comfort and diaper changes. It's great all around.

In other news...

My Mom is coming into town on Friday for 4 days. It'll be her first trip to our home in ATL and we are all excited to see her and for her to meet her newest grandchild. We have some fun activities planned for her visit as well as some good, downhome, chillin' in da hood. I warned Oz about her knack for blowing raspberries on baby stomachs. He thinks he can handle it.

Only two more days until she lands!!!
Hooray!!!!!

BG's Photo Fix - Week of 11/1/2006

It's Alive......Alive.....muhahahaha!

It's Halloween. It's Halloween.

Well, last night was Halloween, so we dressed up Oz and took him to our neighbor's down the street to get some candy for Mom and Dad. Few trick-or-treaters make it down our street since we are at the end of a dead end behind a large church, so the selection was great.

It was a beautiful night, cool and clear. Oz's costume was so convincing that a group of torch-bearing villagers showed up at the front door demanding to see the little monster. Next year we're going to install a moat with crocodiles for our protection.

Our neighbor Felicia dresses up as "crazy cat lady". Her costume was very good but she reminded me of one of my grandmother's friends and I freaked out a little. Oskar really liked her sweater. Tre chic!

Uncle Lars (Eric Sanders) came by the house earlier that day to meet Oz and work on two recording projects with Dad. Lars was so excited to meet Oskar and did great holding and playing with him. Oz really liked meeting Lars. I added a new VID CLIP from the visit. Very cute.

We hope everyone had a happy, safe, and fright-filled Halloween!
